The Jill Hickman Nursing Scholarship was established in 2013 in honor and recognition of Jill Hickman – a nurse who started her career at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in 1974 with a deep love for bedside nursing. Ms. Hickman served as a role model for numerous nurses and built a foundation for the nursing staff and Nanticoke. Jill was diagnosed with Colon Stage IV, liver, lung and bone cancer and, prior to passing, she established the Jill Hickman Nursing Scholarship for graduating high school students pursuing a career in nursing. To raise funds for the scholarship each year, Nanticoke’s Patient Care Division (PCD) started a bake sale. In 2015, the bake sale changed to a waffle brownie sundae sale and Stuff the Piggy Bank fundraiser, which are a huge hit and success each year. On Wednesday, May 2, the PCD leadership team held their 4th annual waffle brownie sundae fundraiser in the Riverview Food Court at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. Donations were accepted for the sundaes and piggy bank stuffing was available for those not indulging. On Monday, June 11, the PCD leadership team presented a check to Nanticoke in the amount of $1691. Through this gift, Jill be remembered and lives will be enriched for youth in our community while encouraging to them to pursue their dreams of a career in nursing. To date, the Jill Hickman Nursing Scholarship has benefitted 10 students in Western Sussex County over the past six years.
