Delmarva Power was honored with this year’s Warrior Friendly Business Award for its ongoing efforts to hire and prepare service members and veterans for the workplace. The award was presented at the Delaware Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve’s (ESGR) 2018 Annual Employer Recognition Banquet. “We firmly believe in hiring the women and men who have served or continue to serve our country,” said Gary Stockbridge, Delmarva Power region president. “They exemplify the leadership, teamwork, integrity, and commitment to excellence we value at Delmarva Power and it’s an honor to work alongside them. As part of our long-term commitment to workforce development, we are creating new resources and programs for our service members and veterans and continually looking for new ways to expand employment opportunities for them across the state.” Delmarva Power and its parent company Exelon employ more than 60 service members and veterans within Delmarva Power’s service area who play an important part in the company’s mission to deliver safe, reliable service to its customers. Many employees with military experience commonly begin their careers as equipment operators, engineers, IT analysts, distribution mechanic apprentices, or first line supervisors, as well as other opportunities throughout the company. The Joint Military Affairs Committee (JMAC) of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce and New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, along with the Military Affairs Committee (MAC) of the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce, selected Delmarva Power as this year’s recipient. The award, which is memorialized on a plaque in the Governor’s office, recognizes the company’s outstanding efforts and focused approach to hiring, preparing, and advocating for veterans, service members and their families. By working with partner organizations, like Hiring our Heroes, ESGR and Recruit Military, and sending recruiters directly to military bases and military job fairs, Delmarva Power reaches a broad array of veteran and service member candidates. When training and developing employees with military experience, the company takes extra steps to provide helpful resources, such as hosting workshops for supervisors on working with service members and veterans and offering an employee resource group, Exelon Militaries Actively Connected or EMAC, that promotes a positive workplace environment for those with prior military service. “Delmarva Power continues to be a leader in the state when it comes to demonstrating the benefits of hiring service members and veterans,” said Don Fulton, JMAC chairman. “The company and its employees lead by example in engaging, hiring and training Delawareans with military experience, and we continue to see their example push other companies in the state to more actively hire our men and women in uniform.” In addition to its work directly with service members and veterans, Delmarva Power also enthusiastically promotes the benefits of hiring those with military experience to other employers across the state. Delmarva Power’s employees volunteer for ESGR, participate in military-related job fairs and events, and actively recruit and train other volunteers to support ESGR’s mission. At the national level, Exelon has been recognized by DiversityInc. as a Top 5 Company for Veterans, by The Military Times as a Best for Vets Employer, on U.S. Veterans Magazine's Best of the Best Top Veteran-Friendly Companies list, as G.I. Jobs magazine’s Military Friendly Employer GOLD Award Recipient, and by RecruitMilitary as the Most Valuable Employer for Military. As a next step in its efforts to support veterans, the company also recently announced the launch of HeroBridge, a program designed to offer additional contractor opportunities to military men and women. Delmarva Power has 1,140 employees across Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland and plays a leading role in the regional economy. Since becoming part of Exelon, Delmarva Power has spent millions supporting workforce development, including dedicating $2 million to workforce development programs in Delaware and a $720,000-grant to Delaware State University (DSU) to launch its Renewable Energy Education Center. In addition, Delmarva Power supports Delaware Pathways, an education program that will help prepare more than 20,000 students for emerging careers through work-based experience by 2020.
