Richelle Vible, Executive Director, said, “Did you know that one out of every 10 residents of the Diocese receive at least one service from Catholic Charities each year? The Bishop’s 5K is a great way to get involved in the mission of Catholic Charities – providing caring service to the most vulnerable in our community. Bishop Malooly will be at the start and finish line – will you?” Established in 1830 as St. Peter’s Orphanage in Wilmington, Catholic Charities, the charitable arm of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, delivers critical direct care human services to over 80,000 individuals and families residing in Delaware and the nine counties of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. No one is excluded from service because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, national origin, or ability to pay. Services provide help for people that result in positive changes in their daily lives and create strong and productive individuals and families. Today’s programs include basic needs services [homeless prevention, rapid rehousing, financial coaching/case management, financial grants for rent/utility payments, food assistance, thrift services], behavioral health services [routine and community based outpatient counseling, addiction recovery support, anger management education, domestic violence intervention], immigration help, and shelter services [residential maternity home, Bayard House; adult emergency shelter, Casa San Francisco; subsidized rental housing for seniors, Marydale Retirement Village]. We are the statewide administrator for both the Delaware Energy Assistance Program and the Delaware Pre-Weatherization Assistance program, and the Kent and Sussex County administrator for the Delaware Weatherization Assistance Program. The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and comprises 56 parishes, 18 missions and 36 schools serving the State of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The diocese is in the midst of its year-long 150th anniversary celebration that will conclude on March 3, 2019. Information is available at cdow.org.
