WHAT: Delaware Technical Community College’s Stanton and George Campuses will honor Representative Joseph E. Miro for his commitment to the Hispanic community and culture in Northern Delaware at its 9th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Honoree Celebration. WHO: Delaware State Representative Joseph E. Miró arrived in America in 1962 at the age of 15, having fled his native Cuba and the communist regime of Fidel Castro. As part of an opportunity created by President Kennedy, he relocated to Wilmington, Delaware. Representative Miró attended Wilmington High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University and a Master of Arts degree from West Chester University. Representative Miró wanted to give back to his community, so he embarked on a career of public service. Representative Miró has been a State Representative since 1998. Prior to being elected for Delaware’s House of Representatives, he served six years as a County Councilman for New Castle County in Northern Delaware. He is a retired educator having served 31 years in Delaware’s school system. He also serves as the president and consultant for Miró Diversified Accounts. Representative Miró belongs to numerous associations, including the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators, where he previously served as the National Vice President, the President, and a member of the Executive Committee; and he is currently the Business, Economic Development, International Relations, and Trade Chair. Representative Miró is also a member of the Council of State Governments and the National Conference of State Legislatures, where he presently serves as a member of the Immigration Task Force. In addition, Representative Miró is a member of the National Education Association, and he was recently appointed by Governor Markell to the Southern Regional Education Board. As a State Representative, Representative Miró sits on the Capital Infrastructure, Education, Health and Human Development, and Capital Improvement committees. He and his wife, Joanne, with whom he has five children, reside in Newark, Delaware. WHEN: Wednesday, October 10, 2018, noon.
