Chesapeake Utilities also encourages customers to consider the following measures to keep their homes safe and save money: Keep all outside vents and gas meters clear of snow and debris. Vents need to be clear to ensure appliances can operate safely and efficiently. Meters are specialized apparatus and removing snow and ice from the area assists in protecting the equipment, allowing it to run more efficiently.? Extreme cold can lead to frozen water pipes. Never attempt to thaw pipes by using open flames, heaters, blow torches or other, similar devices. Customers should not attempt to re-ignite a pilot light on appliances. Should a pilot light need attention, customers should call Chesapeake Utilities or a certified plumber. Customers can save approximately three percent on their heating bill for every degree their home thermostats are reduced. Open curtains and drapes during the day to enable the sun warm your home, and close them at night for insulation. Never heat unused spaces. It’s best to close vents in unused rooms and shut doors to unused rooms. When possible, lower the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees F and conserve hot water.
