Central YMCA Residence Approved For Central YMCA Residence Approved For

The YMCA is ecstatic to announce that men with a State Rental Assistance Program (SRAP) voucher can now use it at the Central YMCA. The Central YMCA in the city of Wilmington features a 180-single-room housing facility for men in need of affordable housing. Built in 1929, the dormitory-style facility provides stability, support and sanctuary for nearly 200 men each year.

According to the Delaware State Housing Authority, the Delaware State Rental Assistance Program (SRAP) is a program that uses state funding to provide rental assistance to particularly vulnerable populations – people exiting or at risk of admission to state long-term care institutions, youth exiting foster care, and reunifying families. The purpose of SRAP is to assist low-income individuals who require affordable housing and supportive services to live safely and independently in the community. You can learn more about the SRAP program here.

Under YMCA of Delaware leadership, including CEO and President Jarrett Royster, Community Vice President Thomas Wallace, and Executive Director of Housing Dr. Jimia Redden, the 180-room facility maintains a 90% occupancy rate. On average, 18 rooms remain unoccupied. YMCA leaders aim to help combat the ongoing affordable housing crisis and are hopeful that being able to accept the State Rental Assistance voucher will help to ensure the facility is at 100% occupancy.

Dr. Redden has years of experience helping residents identify landlords who accept State Rental Assistance vouchers. “I am grateful to offer the men in our program that have a voucher an affordable place to stay, right here at the Central YMCA,” Dr. Redden said. “So many of our residents are surprised to learn they don’t have to pay extra for utilities when they live here.”

The Y’s partners in this initiative include the Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA) and partnering divisions within the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS).

"Strengthening communities in Delaware relies on providing safe and affordable housing for all residents. The YMCA has long been a cornerstone of support for our state's most vulnerable men. The Central YMCA's decision to accept DSHA SRAP vouchers is a significant step forward and will create access to safe and stable housing for men in crisis as they transition to stability," said DSHA Director Cynthia Karnai.

If you or someone you know has a SRAP Housing voucher and could qualify as a resident at the Central YMCA and needs a place to stay, please call 302-571-6950.
