Event Description: ANNUAL CIVIC & RECOGNITION DINNER MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2013 CHASE CENTER ON THE RIVERFRONT SILENT AUCTION BEGINS AT 6:00 PM The Salvation Army is honored to welcome internationally renowned swim coach, Jim Ellis as featured guest speaker for the 2013 Annual Dinner. Coach Ellis is an educator who enjoyed a distinguished career as a high school math teacher. While teaching in the School District of Philadelphia, he coached swimming for the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. His skills and leadership resulted in formation of the country's first swim team comprised of members from the African American community. Coach Ellis and the team's remarkable story were chronicled in the 2007 film "Pride," which was viewed in theaters across the country. As word of Coach Ellis and his PDR team grew, increasing numbers of families from the tri-county area became involved. Swimmers competed at the highest levels in the sport, and PDR team members qualified for Olympic trials. Jim Ellis is director of aquatics programs for The Salvation Army Kroc Center in Philadelphia. Jim Ellis is a remarkable man. Don't miss the opportunity to hear his story at October's Annual Dinner.
