The Delaware KIDS Fund is excited to announce the return of the 10th Annual Delaware KIDS Fund 5K Run/Walk in Newport, DE. Runners and walkers will take to the streets of Newport once again to help benefit the Delaware KIDS Fund childhood hunger initiative on Saturday, August 3rd. Proceeds from the event will help launch, stock and fund the Richardson Park Elementary School Food Pantry. Currently, over 74% of Richardson Park Elementary School students live at or below the poverty line – a rate roughly three times the national average. Last year’s event proceeds helped open a food pantry at Richey Elementary School in Newport. The initiative is a part of the KIDS Fund “5 – 5 – 5” Pantry Program (opening 5 pantries’ in 5 years at 5 schools). Race Details: The race will start and end under the Rt. 141 overpass, traveling East and West on Rt. 4 while making its way through Banning Park. Registration opens at 7:30 AM with the race starting at 8:30 AM on Saturday, August 3rd. Registration and post-race festivities will take place in the grass lot directly across the street from James Street Tavern. Early-bird registration is $25, and $30 after the early-bird period (ending Aug 1) and on the day of the event. This year’s event also features a reduced Youth Registration Fee of $15 for all children under the age of 16. Minquas Firefighter John Smiley, Jr. will serve as the honorary starter. Smiley, Jr. survived life threatening second- and third-degree burns to 10% of his body in March of 2019. Festivities will include face painting for the kids; yard games; DJ music; moon bounce; on-site massages by Synergy Chiropractic; race photo booth; local craft beers poured by Twin Lakes Brewing Company; food provided by the James Street Tavern; Italian ice with Dino’s Ice Cream Truck; The SUEZ misting tent and cooling station; appearances by a few of Delaware’s most beloved mascots including Rocky Blue Winkle from the Wilmington Blue Rocks and YoUDee from the University of Delaware. All race participants will receive a commemorative finisher medal celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the event, an event Tech T-shirt, micro-fiber cooling towel, refreshments and food to enjoy before and after the race. A $200 Cash Prize will be given to the overall male and female winners, plus awards will be given to the top 3 in ten year age groups from 13 and under to 70 and over. Additional medals will be awarded to the top three finishers and each first-place finisher will additionally receive a special prize. Prizes include: Phillies Tickets, UD Football Tickets, Blue Rocks Tickets, First Pitch at a Blue Rocks Game, Rounds of Golf, Overnight Stay at Hyatt Place Dewey Beach, Restaurant Gift Certificates and much more including raffle prizes.
