As the designated “I Love to Read Month,” February focuses on one of the most important building blocks of lifelong success: the ability to read proficiently. A child who cannot read cannot progress through any other curricula – not even word-related problems in mathematics. United Way of Delaware (UWDE) is leading the way to literacy with month-long activities that give children new, modern ways to experience the joy of books and reading using multi-media and the electronic channels that reach children best. “Without a strong foundation in reading, children cannot reach their full potential. We as a community must do everything in our power to instill a love of reading in future generations. We must live up to our responsibilities to our families and the future of our communities,” said UWDE President and Chief Executive Officer Michelle A. Taylor. “United Way of Delaware is laser focused on creating a system that puts all children, particularly those in underserved communities, on a trajectory to fulfilling futures.” February I Love to Read month initiatives include participation in a unique take on UWDE’s Virtual Reading Angels. UWDE and DETV Foundation’s new “Storybook Corner” and “Storytellers” series have partnered to read to children throughout the month on DETV Comcast Channel 28 and on social media. One noted Delawarean or local author will present every day, including UWDE’s Taylor, Delaware State Representative Sherry Dorsey Walker, the Twin Poets, John Micklos, Olivia Keel, Sierra Harris, Earl Cooper and many more. Each Storyteller will record a second video reading from a book on Black History. By combining a local broadcast and digital platform with beloved books and tales, UWDE, DETV Storybook Corner and DETV Kids Storytellers will reach children at home and school, thus helping foster a deeper connection to the joy of reading. To celebrate Black History Month, UWDE Virtual Reading Angels are highlighting African American men who will read to children on the Zoom platform. Videos of these readings will be highlighted on UWDE’s social media platforms every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. throughout February. Men of color are invited to join Virtual Reading Angels by visiting uwde.org/uvolunteer. “UWDE is shining a light on the power and importance of literacy to build engaged students for bright futures. These initiatives are exciting new ways to reach kids, not only in February, but all through the year,” said Ken Livingston, Director of Get Delaware Reading at UWDE. “Adults who show students the power of words by their example will imprint the joy of reading and help create a community of readers and a stronger Delaware,” he concluded.
