Western YMCA Wahoos Swim Team Brings Home National Titles at Recent Swim Meet

The YMCA Western Wahoos Swim Team recently had a breakout performance at the YMCA National Long Course Swimming Festival. The Wahoo’s placed 6th overall combined, 3rd for men, 14th for women, and brought home National titles in three events, making it their best performance in the team’s 50 year history.

Hosted at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, North Carolina, the meet had 42 YMCAs and more than 500 swimmers from around the country. The YMCA Western Wahoo team had 22 national swimmers who competed. Overall, the team swam 76 events which resulted in 64 personal bests, 26 team records, and 38 final qualifying swims.

“I am extremely proud and impressed with our team’s positive attitudes and energy throughout this grueling week of competition,” said Head Wahoos Coach, Ryan Schultz. “Our swimmers, coaches, and families have faced many challenges this year due to the pandemic and it shows remarkable fortitude that they were able to finish the season with these impressive results.”

Tommy Janton became the Wahoos first ever National Champion when he won the 100 Backstroke. Tommy Janton, Alek Elder, Alex Karahalis, and Liam Simmons earned two more National titles in the Men’s 200 and 400 Medley Relays. Swimmers who qualified for finals in individuals or relay events included Georgia Colborn, Alek Elder, Katelyn Fitzgerald, Tommy Janton, Josh Juhasz, Alex Karahalis, Alyssa Napier, Noah Reice, Liam Simmons, Aaron Stevens, Tyler Suchyj, and Maddie Testa.

They YMCA is dedicated to ensuring all children have the opportunity and access to swim programs across Delaware. With pools at most Y locations across the state, the YMCA is positioned as the leader in Delaware for competitive swimming and learn to swim programs. To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to participate, financial assistance is available to those needing help to cover the costs. Families interested in learning more about Y swim programs should visit www.ymcade.org/programs/swim.
