Saint Mark’s High School is pleased to congratulate Mallory Murphy for being named a finalist in the Delaware Theatre Company's 2021-2022 Delaware Young Playwrights Festival. Her play, Madam President, will be performed on the DTC stage on April 1. Murphy was among 56 students from 10 different schools to submit an entry. Over the next few months, she will participate in a series of playwriting workshops with professional theatre artists from Delaware Theatre Company to further refine her writing and ready her work for its public showcase performance. “I’m so excited to see my characters come to life and be portrayed by professionals, and I can’t wait to be involved in the rehearsals and directing too,” said Murphy. “This is a really amazing thing to get to do and I’m very excited to see the play performed in April!” “My play Madam President imagines a future in which it is not only possible, but normalized, for everyone to have the same opportunities and shots at success,” Murphy continued. “I hope it will inspire audience members to think about some milestones our country has yet to accomplish, and how cool it would be if we could get there. It also discusses a character experiencing a major life change and how that is affecting her.” Murphy credits the Spartan Writing Lab with helping her to craft her award-winning script. “Ms. Kinsey from our writing lab helped me perfect my script and I’m so grateful that I had access to such a cool resource,” she said. The Spartan Writing Lab is a new addition to the Saint Mark’s English Department this year. Dana Kinsey, Director of the Spartan Writing Lab, is elated by her student’s success. "I'm so proud of Mallory. She took feedback from the Delaware Theatre Company faculty and from me like a true professional in order to raise the stakes in her play,” she said. “She incorporated the feedback into her astounding script, and I can't wait to see it produced." Kinsey continued, "Mallory's hard work created opportunities for her to grow as a playwright; hearing her dialogue on stage and watching her characters come to life will be amazing! I'm so honored to be part of her journey.” President Tom Fertal is quick to offer his congratulations to Murphy. “We are so very proud of Mallory for this accomplishment. The collaboration between Mallory and Ms. Kinsey is a perfect example of how our dedicated faculty and staff assist students in reaching their full potential,” he said.
