State championship #108 is in the books for Saint Mark’s High School! The Saint Mark’s Girls Soccer Team took home the “W” last Friday with a hard-fought victory over Caravel Academy. While goals by Lily Phillips and Maddie Schepers clinched the win, Head Coach Dan Swasey said it was a total team effort from whistle to whistle. “I could not be prouder of the way the girls played on Friday and all season long,” he said. “This year had more ups and downs and adversity than last year, and they handled it so very well. We always talk about mental toughness, resiliency and heart… and those characteristics were never more evident than in the championship game! Against an extremely tough Caravel squad, the girls showed mental toughness all night long, a team-wide resiliency and the heart to wear their opponent down in the final minutes. Our girls flat out wanted this game more and it showed. I am so proud!” The victory marks the fifth Spartan sports team to bring home a Delaware State Championship in the 2021-2022 school year — joining the Girls Volleyball Team, Girls Cross Country Team, Boys Track & Field Team and Girls Track & Field team. Principal Diane Casey was in the stands cheering on the team. "I am so happy and proud of our Girls Soccer Team. They never let up and worked together as a team to win the championship,” she said. “Coach Swasey is a class act and his players rose to the challenge. What a great way to end a winning school year. Great job coaches and players, well deserved."
