WilmU Debuts Latest Business Course in Spanish Immersion Format

Wilmington University presents the latest addition to its growing bilingual undergraduate business curriculum: Business Communications. This live, online, Spanish immersion format class starts this fall and is designed for students who speak Spanish and English but prefer Spanish instruction.

Building on the success of the university’s first Spanish immersion course, Principles of Management, introduced in 2023, the new course will also be conducted entirely in Spanish. This approach benefits both native speakers and those seeking to improve their skills and prepares them for bilingual careers.

Dr. Robin Weinstein, dean of the College of Business, calls the bilingual format a progressive step aligned with the institution’s mission. “Wilmington University is committed to meeting the diverse needs of our student body,” he said. “Reflective of our ongoing efforts to provide innovative, inclusive, and relevant educational opportunities for all students, the introduction of a Spanish immersion format for our Business Communications course exemplifies this dedication by offering courses that cater to bilingual students. We not only support their academic growth; we also equip them with the cultural and linguistic skills necessary to thrive in today’s global business environment.”

The latest U.S. Census data shows that the Hispanic population comprises 19.1% of the U.S. population, with 7% of Delaware's 1 million residents from Spanish-speaking households. “The Latino population is the largest minority in the U.S. today,” said Dr. Guillermina Gonzalez, assistant professor and assistant chair of Undergraduate Programs, who is at the forefront of bilingual instruction within the Wilmington University College of Business. “Providing the opportunity for bilingual instruction allows Latino and other students to choose how they prefer to learn. Being bilingual increases not only cultural awareness but also improves academic performance. Being bilingual implies that you have much more to offer and opens the door to better job prospects. It increases your chances of being hired.”

“WilmU is offering a fantastic opportunity for students to enhance their language skills while learning vital business communication strategies in a real-world context,” said Dr. Sandy Flores, a bilingual leadership expert and instructor for the Spanish immersion course. “I highly encourage all interested students to consider enrolling to take advantage of this enriching learning experience.”

Brenda Soto Torres is among the first students who selected the bilingual format. “Dr. Flores does an excellent job [of] keeping students engaged in her material,” she said. “I love her positive energy and how dedicated she was to our learning.”
